Vehicle Clearing

How Much Does It Cost to Import a Car into Jamaica?

One of the first questions anyone importing a vehicle into Jamaica asks is: how much is this actually going to cost? The answer involves more than just the purchase price. There are shipping costs, customs duties, taxes, port handling fees, and clearing charges that all add up.

Purchase Price of the Vehicle

This is what you pay the seller. Customs in Jamaica will assess duties based on the CIF value, which is cost plus insurance plus freight, so the purchase price is just the starting point.

Shipping and Freight Costs

Getting a vehicle from the USA, Canada, or the UK to Jamaica by sea typically costs between USD $700 and USD $2,500 depending on the origin port, vehicle size, and shipping method. RoRo (Roll-on Roll-off) is cheaper but leaves the vehicle exposed on deck. Container shipping costs more but provides better protection.

Import Duty

Import duty on motor vehicles in Jamaica is calculated as a percentage of the CIF value. The rate varies depending on the vehicle type and engine size. Passenger vehicles typically attract duty rates in the range of 10% to 40% of CIF value.

General Consumption Tax

GCT is applied on top of the duty-inclusive value. The standard GCT rate in Jamaica is 15%.

Additional Stamp Duty and Environmental Levy

Certain vehicle categories attract additional stamp duty. An environmental levy also applies to motor vehicle imports, with the amount varying by vehicle age and engine size.

Port Handling and Storage Fees

Once your vehicle arrives at the port, demurrage and port handling fees begin accumulating daily. Getting your vehicle cleared quickly minimises these charges significantly.

Customs Clearing Fee

If you work with a licensed customs broker, there will be a professional fee for handling the clearing process. At Prime Logistics JA, we provide a clear breakdown of our fees upfront so there are no surprises.

Important: The total landed cost of your vehicle will be substantially more than the purchase price alone. Always get a duty estimate before committing to a purchase overseas.

Tips for Managing Import Costs

  • Get a duty estimate before you purchase the vehicle
  • Declare the accurate purchase price
